About Me

I have only recently ventured into the world of kayak fishing and love every second of it. I currently use a Hobie Outback kayak and I have created this blog to share some of my experiences and knowledge.

Picnic Point on the Maroochy River

Trip #4

I was determined to catch a feed as I had some friends coming for the night and wanted to cook a birthday dinner of beer battered fish and chips for them. I decided to focus on using livies and nippers as they seem to be more successful. I launched @ 8am at picnic point and headed over to the yabbie flats. I collected yabbies and some poddie mullet. I also noticed some whiting working the edges so I tried the popper again, nothing. Hooked up the fresh bait and started drifting / slow trolling. It was mostly constant action, drifting over flats and drop offs where the water was moving fast seemed to work best. The yabbies provided the best results, with many bream and small flathead.

The wind really picked up and I was drifting alot faster at times, I kept getting longtoms hitching a ride on my mullet. I decided to add a small running sinker to the leader, I doubt this is the best way to do it but being new to using braid gave it a go. This worked well and got less longtoms. I ended up at the entrance to twin lakes, very exposed and decided to head back for shelter, there were no other boats and hadn't caught anything for 30 min. I nearly wound in the lines to make it easier against the wind but luckily I didn't, the live mullet on my new rod took off and got to hear that sweet sound of braid peeling off the reel. I fought a 50cm trevally for 5 or so min, adjusting drag and chasing it with the Hobie Outback. I landed it and at first thought I was a big silver trevally, never catching one before I didn't realise it was a small Giant Trevally.

I worked back to picnic point as the legs were getting sore and the wind was getting strong. I found a good channel infront of Chambers island which produced a few smaller fish. I got back and didn't realize that sitting in a yak peddling for 5 hours turns your legs to jelly and I made a very ungraceful exit from the yak, only to fall back in it, luckily my new rod stayed in the yak.
